Over 500 years ago, Christopher Columbus used a compass, a cross staff and an astrolabe to find land when navigating unfamiliar waters. Imagine for a moment that he did not. He would have been sailing aimlessly, and it’s more than likely that he and his crew would have met their match long before they made their great discovery. The reality is that it is just as easy to get lost today as it was in 1492, only now we are not literally lost at sea, but rather lost in a sea of daily business tasks. Your sweet spot may be across the ocean, but if you are like many business owners, you lack the navigational tools necessary to guide you towards land.

Today traditional navigational tools have been rendered obsolete; now replaced by more a accurate tool called a GPS or global positioning system.  The GPS enables us to take the shortest and most direct route to our destination and is accurate to within 15 feet of the defined target.

But what if this instrument went beyond travel and directions? What if you were able to purchase a GPS for your business, or even purchase one as a gift for a business owner you know? What if the GPS could get you or them to within 15 feet of a specific goal? What if by using such a system we could operate our businesses with greater success, less stress and more fun?

Would it surprise you then to learn that such a system exists? It’s called a Goal Planning System and it’s programmed with very unique software called SMART. And the acronym wasn’t stumbled upon by accident: the software enables the system to operate at maximum efficiency, and if you ask me, that’s a pretty smart way to run your business.
So how about you take a test drive of the system with me?
Most people think all you have to do is simply turn it on or set the goal and objective and you’re done. Well in a sense that is true, but ensuring that you reach your destination in a timely manner requires a little more effort. Like the GPS found in your car, the Goal Planning System needs you to input information in order to guide you to your target destination.
What follows are some tips that I’ve compiled that will help you get the most out of the GPS designed to put your business on the route to success.

We start with the S (Specific) because a well written goal needs to be clearly defined so that you know what it will look and feel like. Next is the M (Measurable) so you know when it will be accomplished. Then for A (Acceptable): Ask yourself is it honest, ethical and within your set of values? This is followed by R (Realistic): Do you currently have the ability to reach your goal by the proposed deadline? Finally, T (Tangible) will your goal achieve a positive gain for your self and your business?

Here are some additional things to consider:

1. Take the time to write down all the Benefits from Achieving your Goal. We all do things for a reason so it is important to identify all the benefits associated with the goal.

2. Take the time to make a list of all the Possible Obstacles. There will invariably be some hiccups along the way and many of them are predictable with just a bit of foresight. Take the time to list some of the road blocks you may encounter and identify the Solutions to your potential problems.

3. Lastly you need a list of the Specific Action Steps that you need to take and then organize each task according to priority level.
